Another leap

Leap of faith. Gonna try and do a digital download/upgrade of my desktop to Win8Pro from Win7Pro. As a technologist, it's something I need to do, if only to speak from experience, good or bad.

I am backed up. I do have a notebook on Win7, so it's not quite a blind leap. *deep breath* See y'all on the other end.

And "Temple of Syrinx" popped into my head, haha. Praying to the wrong gods...

Update: Upgrade finished. About 2.5 hours, for my stuff, which included migrating files, settings and applications. Not bad, if anxious.

This will take some getting used to. Just about all the applications I have are considered "legacy" to Windows 8, so it keeps hopping over to the what is now "classic" Windows 7 desktop. Rather annoying. And that whole Tiles thing? That's the Start menu taking up your whole screen. I still need to find out how to reach my Programs listings, since there is no longer a flyout menu system.

For those that are stuck in the Windows XP (or earlier) world, this transition is going to hurt bad. If you were considering a platform move, to OSX or some Linux distro, now would be a good time. It's that different from XP, like "falling off a cliff" different.

  1. Nvm. Found my apps. they are toggled at the bottom of the "Start" screen. Pinning more apps to the Start screen.

This is going to be a long process...

  2. Oh. For the media workers (like photographers). I had to upgrade my video drivers and control software, and my color calibration software is now seeing a different display. Had to recalibrate. Not a difficult but something to watch out for.

  3. Well, the problem I've been having with "freezing" on a cold-boot hasn't manifested, yet.

Yes, I am invoking Murphy's Law; I need to know if the problem has been addressed, which would justify going through this grief.

    1. Boo!!!! Still doing it. But this time, I saw the screen flop to a light blue screen, like the CHKDSK screen, and a "0" appeared at the top. Looked like another line was trying to come up before it locked up.

Not sure if this is progress or not.

  4. Oh, my. The Ribbon. Forgot about that. And I kinda want a Status Bar. It's handy for telling me when I'm about to screw up, bad.

  5. Oh, and they put handy, and very dangerous things, right on the Ribbon. Like Format.

  6. Get the distinct impression that Microsoft thinks you shouldn't be shutting your computer down; "Shutdown" is buried in the Settings area.
